Two gardeners. One monster garden clearance. And absolutely no need to compete.
There’s a funny thing about running a small gardening business – Technically, every other gardener is a competitor.
Except I don’t really see it that way.
I’m Paul from The Tidy Garden, and recently I was invited by fellow gardener Wesley to give him a hand with what can only be described as a monster garden clearance – no joke!!
Overgrown shrubs. Weeds. Brambles. Bamboo!!!
Oh and some bamboo….
This garden had ZERO attention for 20 years, and Quintin an elderly man with health issues needed help.
3 Gardeners had already blown him out and not turned up, and Wesley was a little concerned he’d bitten off more than he could chew, so he called in the big guns for reinforcement – and I’m super chuffed he did.
It was exactly the sort of job I love, a proper good workout for me, and nice watching Wes sweat it out also.
We got cracking – and we loved it!
What a result.

Complete, Don’t Compete
Wesley is relatively early in his journey as a professional gardener, building his experience, his customer base and figuring out exactly where he wants to take his gardening business – and I’m only slightly ahead of him myself – In fact, I’m still on it.
That’s why, when another gardener asks for a hand, my first thought isn’t:
“But aren’t we competitors?”
It’s:
“What time are we starting?”
There is plenty of gardening work out there for good, reliable people, and I believe the best thing we can do is work together.
Share knowledge.
Share tools.
Share experience.
Share the workload.
And, on particularly big garden clearance jobs, share the occasional look that says:
“Where on earth do we start?”

What Does a Garden Clearance Actually Involve?
A proper garden clearance can completely transform an outside space.
It might include:
- Cutting back heavily overgrown shrubs
- Removing weeds and unwanted growth
- Tackling brambles and nettles
- Pruning and reducing plants that have taken over
- Clearing paths, patios and borders
- Removing dead or unwanted vegetation
- Cutting back neglected areas
- Clearing green waste
- Generally finding the garden that disappeared underneath it all
Some gardens need a gentle tidy.
Others need the gardening equivalent of rolling up your sleeves, putting the kettle on and declaring war on a buddleia.
We rather enjoy the latter.
Garden Clearance Without the Judgement
One thing worth saying is that overgrown gardens happen.
People get busy. Houses change hands. Gardens get away from us. Sometimes someone simply doesn’t know where to begin.
That’s where a professional garden clearance can help.
You don’t need to apologise because the weeds are four feet tall.
You don’t need to spend the weekend desperately hacking things down before the gardener arrives.
That’s the job.
We can come in, assess what should stay, work out what needs to go and start turning the jungle back into a garden.
And there’s something incredibly satisfying about it.
At the beginning of the day you can barely see the fence.
By the end, you’ve discovered a border, a path, three shrubs and possibly a shed nobody remembered owning.
Two Gardeners Can Be Better Than One
Bigger garden clearance jobs are also a perfect example of why local tradespeople working together makes sense.
A job that might be overwhelming for one person suddenly becomes achievable with two experienced, hard-working gardeners.
There’s also knowledge being passed in both directions.
I’ve learnt an enormous amount since starting The Tidy Garden, but I’ll never pretend I know everything. Every gardener has different experiences, techniques and ideas.
Wesley will develop his own style, his own customers and his own way of doing things.
If I can help him along the way, brilliant.
And if we can tackle some enormous gardens together while we’re at it, even better.
