The sun comes out for a fortnight and Britain completely loses its mind.
Garden centres sell out of watering cans. Facebook fills up with self-appointed water police. Your neighbour starts whispering that someone’s been caught using a hosepipe after dark.
Welcome to summer.
With hosepipe restrictions now affecting much of Berkshire, you’d think every garden was moments away from turning into the Sahara.
Truth is… most of them aren’t.
As someone who spends every day gardening around Winnersh, Wokingham, Woodley, Earley and Twyford, I’m seeing the same thing over and over.
People are worrying about the wrong bits.
Your lawn isn’t dead.
It’s asleep.
Grass has been dealing with British summers for thousands of years. It goes brown, has a little sulk, then perks back up when the rain returns.
Please stop staring at it through the patio doors looking heartbroken.
Your plants are tougher than you think.
Established shrubs, roses and perennials have proper root systems. They don’t need a nightly shower.
New plants? Yes.
Hanging baskets? Definitely.
Your twenty-year-old lavender?
It’ll probably survive better than you.
Want to help your garden?
Forget the hose for a minute.
Weed.
Deadhead.
Mulch.
Tidy.
All those jobs help your garden cope with dry weather far more than ten minutes of waving a hose around.
Speaking of mulch…
If gardeners had a superpower, it’d be mulch.
A few centimetres of bark or compost keeps moisture in the soil, stops weeds and keeps roots cooler.
It’s basically SPF 50 for your flower beds.
The gardens coping best this summer all have one thing in common.
Healthy soil.
Not expensive gadgets.
Not automatic irrigation.
Not someone watering twice a day.
Just decent soil, sensible planting and regular care.
Funny that.
Autumn is closer than you think…
Here’s the bit most people miss.
Whilst everyone else is worrying about watering, I’m already thinking about autumn.
Autumn is hands down the best time to improve your garden. The soil is warm, the rain usually returns (eventually!) and plants establish beautifully before winter.

It’s about maintenance.
Autumn is when we’ll all start planting again, refreshing borders and getting gardens ready for next year.
Until then, let nature do some of the work.
She usually knows what she’s doing.
