As I reflect on my teenage years spent as a gardener at Winslow Hall, a profound sense of nostalgia washes over me. The hall, an exquisite example of Queen Anne architecture, was constructed in 1700 for William Lowndes, Secretary to the Treasury during Queen Anne’s reign. Its stately façade and meticulously designed grounds provided a magnificent backdrop to my formative experiences.
Each morning as a very junior gardener and as part of a team of three, I would arrive early, greeted by the soft light illuminating the hall’s grand exterior. The scent of dew-kissed grass and the chorus of morning birds became the symphony of my days. Tending to the diverse flora, from vibrant flowerbeds to ancient trees, I developed a deep appreciation for the nuances of horticulture.
That said, nothing beat a few hours on the sit on mower!
The gardens of Winslow Hall were not just a workplace but a sanctuary where I discovered the therapeutic rhythm of nature, and at the age of just 15. The act of nurturing plants, witnessing their growth and seasonal transformations, instilled in me a lifelong passion for gardening, nature and the outdoors.
Working amidst the hall’s historic grandeur, I often pondered the generations that had walked its halls and strolled its gardens. In retrospect, my tenure at Winslow Hall was more than just a job; it was a pivotal chapter in my life, I’ll never forget tending the Fuchsia house. The experiences I gained, the people I met and the passions I discovered continue to influence me, reminding me of the enduring bond between humans and the natural world.
